City of Austin – Watershed Protection Department
General Information

Watershed Protection Department protects lives, property and the environment of our community by reducing the impact of flood, erosion and water pollution. Originally called the Drainage Utility, the Watershed Protection Department was established in 1991 to manage the City’s creeks, drainage systems and water quality programs. Our focus is reducing the impact of flooding, erosion and water pollution.

We have many ongoing programs to help with flooding, erosion and water pollution. We also complete a variety of construction projects such as stormwater ponds, storm drain systems and stream bank restorations.

The Youth Education program provides school outreach, field trips, curriculum and service learning opportunities to encourage informed decision-making about choices that impact Austin’s water quality.
