General Information

The Austin Nature & Science Center’s basic purpose is to install in our students and visitors an appreciation of the complexity of natural systems, a feeling of responsibility for their preservation and care and awareness that humans are a part of, not apart from, these systems. The means to this end begin with curiosity and interest, stimulated by qualified leadership and real life involvement activities. Such ‘hands on’ experiences provide the participants with opportunities to discover for themselves, using the senses as basic tools of learning, the marvels and truths of their natural environment.

Located on the western edge of Zilker Park and adjacent to the Zilker Nature Preserve, the Austin Nature and Science Center (ANSC) is dedicated to the exploration of the natural world. Since 1960, ANSC has provided nature exhibits, education programs and recreation resources for countless visitors, teachers and children of all ages. The ANSC provides hands-on educational exhibits and recreational activities that increase awareness and appreciation of the natural environment.

ANSC is open 9-5 Monday – Saturday; 12-5 on Sunday. There is no fee for individuals or their families to visit. For organized groups wanting an On Your Own Tour, there is a $1 per person fee and should be scheduled with Visitor Services. You may call (512) 974-3888 to schedule a group On Your Own Tour.

ANSC offers many programs for preschoolers, kids, families and adults. Program topics range from butterflies to caving. Our hands-on discovery activities are targeted at getting participants to think more about the world around them. Our programs run throughout the year with camps during school holidays - winter, spring and summer breaks. Information about ANSC programs can be found at the Center’s website.
