Description:

Join the author of this season’s StoryWalk, Game Warden Joann Garza-Mayberry, for an interactive book reading/signing, hike and fishing-themed event!

Joann Garza-Mayberry Poses with her Children's Books at Lockhart State ParkFor the first time ever, the author of our fall StoryWalk book, “Callie Catches a Lunker,” is coming to Lockhart State Park to celebrate the unveiling of our new StoryWalk with fun activities!! All ages welcome.

What is a StoryWalk? A StoryWalk is a fun way for folks to enjoy reading and trail hiking at the same time! The pages of “Callie Catches a Lunker” will be posted at intervals along Clear Fork Trail. Walk the trail with the author of the story, Game Warden Joann Garza-Mayberry, as she reads the pages of the book and shares personal stories that inspired her children’s book series!

After your hike, join us for:

  • A book signing with the author!  We will have all 3 of Joann’s children’s books in the Warden Caldwell, Wildlife Conservation Officer series available for sale. Feel free to purchase one or bring your own and have it signed. Don’t miss out on getting your photo with the author!
  • Fish Printing! Try your hand at Gyotaku, a traditional form of Japanese art, and paint your own fish print to take home.
  • Backyard bass! Practice casting a line for one of our “fish,” and see what you catch!

Prepare: Wear sturdy shoes and bring water. The walk is about ½-mile on easy terrain. No registration required.

Meet: In the picnic area of the park. If driving from park HQ, pass the pool and take your first right-hand turn into the picnic area parking lot.

Fees: This event is free with paid entry into the park. Regular park entrance fees are $3/adult, free for children 12 & under. Books available for sale are $12 /each (Cash, Venmo, Zelle or CashApp only).
